Automatic Number Plate Recognition is a system which uses optimal character recognition to allow images of vehicle registrations captured on CCTV to be detected, read and logged, together with supplementary information such as location, time and date. This information can be stored in a database so that further data regarding the vehicle and driver can be easily accessed. This means that any security concern can be automatically flagged and an alert given.

ANPR systems are widely in use on a large scale, such as London's Congestion Charge system, Local Authorities' traffic monitoring or Customs' border crossing points. However, this technology also brings significant benefits to the smaller user in both security and access control applications, such as petrol filling stations, who record vehicle number plates to log drivers who leave without paying for fuel, or car parks, who can configure the system to provide automatic access and customer charging. The system could even be used in Drive Through retail location to recognise returning customers and use previous purchase information to improve customer service.
