Security Systems Technology Ltd (SST) have been awarded a multi-million pound contract to design, build and commission a state-of-the-art, physical and logical IP security platform at a new data centre in Birmingham called ‘Central Exchange’.

Construction works on the 110,000 sq ft site began in July 2012 with the 1st Phase of the security works successfully completed in May 2013 and the facility is now available for tenancy.

The premise behind the project was to supply the client, Data City Exchange (dce), with a managed security environment that will create a multi-layered and integrated defence platform including perimeter defence, high-definition IP surveillance and biometric access control.

dce provide, design and build data centre space to the major corporate, government and carrier markets based on their industry leading Evo-POD data centre which is available either on a dce operated campus site, at a customer’s own proprietary site or at a 3rd party operator campus. dce delivers customers a truly scalable solution based on its patent pending engineering solution which allows customers to upgrade their cooling within the same Evo-POD footprint without the need to buy additional Evo-PODs.

SST specified both well proven and emerging technologies (following extensive field testing) as well as developing a number of their own bespoke integrations. IP technology is being used throughout to ensure future-proofing and scalability and a leading Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software platform will provide an intuitive and simple to use front end for operational security staff.

This software-based integration platform connects and manages disparate building and security technologies. Aggregating intelligence from these systems, it will allow dce operators to react faster and more precisely to incidents, and will also allow dce customers to seamlessly integrate with their own in-house security systems for remote asset monitoring. The platform provides operators with real-time situational awareness through a Common Operating Picture (COP) and following an alarm activation, will present step by step process guidance, ensuring complete compliance to security policies.

The contract award was based on SST’s innovative approach and their in-depth knowledge of IP interoperability as well as their response to the client’s requirement that the physical security solution should be bespoke and out-perform anything used before. In support of this project, SST invested heavily in product research and real life testing with all systems having to demonstrate performance excellence. Many systems didn’t make the grade and alternatives had to be sourced and tested.

The entire physical security network will be monitored by a Control & Command software platform (PSIM). When any of the sensors are activated by a threat or event, the security team will be notified immediately through various visual methods. At the security team’s disposal are a range of equipment and technologies available to assess the situation and the system allows default alarm settings to be predetermined at the hand over point, delivering a truly bespoke solution for all dce customers.
