dce – Datacentre Security

Security Systems Technology Ltd (SST) have been awarded a multi-million pound contract to design, build and commission a state-of-the-art, physical and logical IP security platform at a new data centre in Birmingham called ‘Central Exchange’.

Construction works on the 110,000 sq ft site began in July 2012 with the 1st Phase of the security works successfully completed in May 2013 and the facility is now available for tenancy.

The premise behind the project was to supply the client, Data City Exchange (dce), with a managed security environment that will create a multi-layered and integrated defence platform including perimeter defence, high-definition IP surveillance and biometric access control.

dce provide, design and build data centre space to the major corporate, government and carrier markets based on their industry leading Evo-POD data centre which is available either on a dce operated campus site, at a customer’s own proprietary site or at a 3rd party operator campus. dce delivers customers a truly scalable solution based on its patent pending engineering solution which allows customers to upgrade their cooling within the same Evo-POD footprint without the need to buy additional Evo-PODs.

SST specified both well proven and emerging technologies (following extensive field testing) as well as developing a number of their own bespoke integrations. IP technology is being used throughout to ensure future-proofing and scalability and a leading Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software platform will provide an intuitive and simple to use front end for operational security staff.

This software-based integration platform connects and manages disparate building and security technologies. Aggregating intelligence from these systems, it will allow dce operators to react faster and more precisely to incidents, and will also allow dce customers to seamlessly integrate with their own in-house security systems for remote asset monitoring. The platform provides operators with real-time situational awareness through a Common Operating Picture (COP) and following an alarm activation, will present step by step process guidance, ensuring complete compliance to security policies.

The contract award was based on SST’s innovative approach and their in-depth knowledge of IP interoperability as well as their response to the client’s requirement that the physical security solution should be bespoke and out-perform anything used before. In support of this project, SST invested heavily in product research and real life testing with all systems having to demonstrate performance excellence. Many systems didn’t make the grade and alternatives had to be sourced and tested.

The combined platform really does represent best of breed

Chetan Vasudev, Managing Director of SST, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this major and prestigious contract. For a small business like ours to even gain the opportunity to vie for such a project is a breath of fresh air. The core delivery team has worked tremendously hard to put the solution together and we are very proud of our work to get us to this stage.

“With over 28 best-of-breed supply chain partners and under the guidance of various third party advisers and Government bodies such as the CPNI, we were able to offer a unique security package that could effectively deal with the security, operational and corporate governance requirements on a project of this class and size.

We look forward to working closely with dce as well as the other chosen partners in a long-term collaborative approach. The Evo-POD’s™ which are at the heart of the dce modular data centre concept have been in design for many years and are truly revolutionary. With their Evo-POD data centre solutions, dce are providing enterprise class cloud services, and SST has matched the excellence of their offering with a best-of-breed physical security platform.”

John Eland, Chief Executive of dce, commented: “Having looked at several security solution providers, we had no hesitation in appointing SST. Their ability to understand our complex requirements, capability to create a best in breed solution and flexibility to meet our demands were the critical factors in our decision. We are creating cutting edge data centre facilities and as such our ‘”Evo-SEC” security platform has to be industry leading. Our partnership with SST has enabled us to create a bespoke, first class and truly unique global security platform to be deployed across Evo-POD data centres whether operated by us or on customers own, or 3rd party sites. We look forward to developing our strategic partnership with SST as we push forward with our global expansion plans.”

Without being intrusive, SST designed a multi-layered, defence security platform with the following systems making up the overall solution:

  • PSIM Control & Command Platform (full situational awareness)
  • 3m high 358 weld-mesh fencing (anti-cut, anti-climb)
  • Multi-zone, fence mounted, perimeter detection system (PIDS)
  • Crash tested trackless speed gates (PAS68 rated)
  • Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
  • Vehicle Air-locks
  • Military grade Thermal Imaging CCTV cameras
  • Predator IR, Thermal & White light PTZ dome cameras (target tracking)
  • 5 Megapixel High-Def IP CCTV cameras (& IP PTZ domes)
  • Intelligent Video Analytics
  • Iris Recognition (Access Control)
  • Multi-spectral Fingerprint Recognition (Access Control)
  • CBRNe Package (chemical, biological, radiological & nuclear)
  • Personnel ‘man-trap’ – using volumetric detection
  • HP IT Hardware Infrastructure
  • Digital Audio ‘2-way’ Intercom and Tannoy system
  • Intruder Alarm (Redcare)
  • Infra-red LED lighting
  • Biometric locker & Key management

The entire physical security network will be monitored by a Control & Command software platform (PSIM). When any of the sensors are activated by a threat or event, the security team will be notified immediately through various visual methods. At the security team’s disposal are a range of equipment and technologies available to assess the situation and the system allows default alarm settings to be predetermined at the hand over point, delivering a truly bespoke solution for all dce customers.

About Data City Exchange (dce)

Data City Exchange (dce), is a data centre designer and operator, offering bespoke networked data centre solutions to the major corporate, government and carrier markets, based on its unique Evo-POD™ data centre design and flexible service offering of OpEx rather than CapEx.

The dce business model has been designed to offer customers an offsite, bespoke outsourced data centre, whilst ensuring the customer can still retain “ownership and operation” of their own data storage facility.

The flagship dce campus site in Birmingham incorporates 110,000 square feet of high security, modular, scalable data centre space. Future UK expansion plans include flagship campus sites in Belfast, Newcastle and London. The Evo-POD is also now available for deployment in the USA and MEA and Asia and can be deployed anywhere as a standalone customised build.

With each location interconnected by dual resilient dark fibre connections, dce provides its customers with an instant fully meshed, redundant multi-site data centre solution.
